Black Darter Dragonfly
Info - Like their name would suggest, Black Darters are known to “dart out” and catch their prey by surprise. They are carnivorous in both their larva and adult stages, enjoying a variety of flying insects, other species of larvae and tadpoles. Adult male Darters are easy to spot as they are almost entirely black in colour, with only a few spots of yellow on their sides. Females and juvenile males are mostly yellow/brown with black markings.
When and where to see - June to October around peat and boggy areas, wetlands and heathland.
Fact - Black Darters are the UK’s smallest resident Dragonfly.
